God brings peace to David's reign, allowing David to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. God makes a covenant with David's heirs and promises his son will build the Temple. The peace is disrupted when David's son Absalom tries to seize the throne.
David is ultimately restored to his throne but mourns the loss of his son. Now facing enemies inside Israel, he spends his remaining years preparing for the Temple.
The kingdom divides; the northern tribes are now Israel or Ephraim, and the southern tribes are collectively Judah. Both descend into idolatry, althoguh Judah retains the Davidic royal line and occasionally has good kings. Elijah and Elisha minister to Israel in the days of Ahab and his successors. Judah's throne is compromised when King Jehoshaphat's son Jehoram marries Ahab's evil daughter Athaliah to form an alliance between the two kingdoms.
